10 Tips and Tricks to playing Tribes of Midgard

Whether you’ve just started playing Tribes of Midgard, or you’re an Einherjar veteran, there’s plenty of new things to learn about the game here and there, especially as the game evolves over time.

Some tips and tricks to playing Tribes of Midgard are more on the hidden side, gained knowledge through playing, or passed down through our community. We’ve recapped some of our favourites that you might not know about yet here!

Let’s get into it.

10. Sound the Rallying Horn

View attachment 352
If you want to alert all players in the world that help is needed at the Village, you can walk up to the Rallying Horn to the left side of Dagný. Sounding the horn will send a global chat alert to all players in the World, and will make a sound heard by everyone in the match. (just be sure not to cry wolf)

9. Seek temperature protection at Shrines, Merchants and Sorcerers

View attachment 353
If you’re too hot, or too cold while out exploring (I get it, sometimes you gotta run naked) you can retreat to a nearby Shrine, Merchant or Sorcerer. Standing by any of these points of interest is considered a safe zone, and you will stop taking damage from the elements.

8. Take a Shortcut to the Village Shrine

View attachment 354

When you’re in a pinch and need to teleport back to the Village (FAST) - you can open your World Map, and press “CTRL” or “Y” on the controller, to immediately snap to the Village shrine. No more searching around the map to get home quick!

7. Quick-drop items

m1vVpJuDN7Y9Mh7luot-o9sTFr1EmOWKDhMvyq2b_Cl3X5OY7LDMdTfjw0xFI8h2N4JpZhKeGIF-yyW5dPVmYrDvosl4WM2UPGoy_AJjVQVNNJX7bsDFLpx8KRv6ttWMRx0ok2vplbU1ilkVww

If your friend needs a new gear set (how kind of you), or if you want to quickly clear your inventory, you can click on an item and select "drop". But did you know there’s a faster way to drop items? You can "right-click" on the mouse or left "in-click" on the controller to drop items with one click.

6. Pin Recipes on the go

Do you ever have those moments where you’re out exploring, keen on crafting this one specific weapon, but don’t remember a single material you need to craft it? (dw, same). You can easily pin crafting recipes on the go. Just open up the inventory screen (by pressing “I” on keyboard or “select” on controller and head to the Recipes tab.

Then, either right click (keyboard) or left in-click (controller) to “pin” the recipe. Now, each time you collect a material related to that crafting recipe, it will live update and let you know how many you need!

5. Jump in the water to cool off

SVcgov6Ait3smP2IPOQPG9Mzb_njl96hfO6yLGPqwCofT5p6jBO-VY-25EsGml23BvEXB5zIuqLA5bhJcL33sQRXMZEFd3WYX3jQ-uI4vYqzjaWV04ssvY-XO65Dwv9SWuOp4zYbS0IH5gfObg

Another tip relating to temperature - it can also be nullified by jumping into the water. Note that this only works if you’re too hot though! So next time you’re taking a trip to the Smoky Highlands… make sure you have a fresh river nearby just in case.

4. Blue loot bags can be picked up by everyone in the match

0b9I9jLS0YEtVU-Uk_bN7FzAukvy71056BsTsRAIeaahKMxonlNxyhHyVD7UEWFrGcPbAjKjd0ZjzXOafu-v4C7N3OZuIDNPTlxVpEC7vcKyZR68AjXqx6CE6QHA07y4s2MupQc-SFnSaKckpA

If you see a blue loot bag on the ground - be sure to let your teammates know! Everyone in the world can pick up an instance of these materials. (Sharing is caring). Keep in mind that they do disappear after a few days, so use a pin on your map (just click on the map to toggle this option) to let others know where the loot is!

3. The Seed of Yggdrasil heals gates (and you) faster when it has more Souls

HqTJ3E1KduksF5izB-L-shVDE8LwTWT4b_5xUqsOE6MMkqfj20IQ1xhEPJAyUYfv62zpBnPT2WLn2RJY6DE8VgBKBnxLA3ZS3egoM4VNxSEL2Taz1B6gKWJ_N8OE3J-0U4e5gxdubs2bflcC0A

There’s a reason the Seed of Yggdrasil is at the heart of everything in your Village. Not only does it heal YOU when you’re in the Village, but it also heals (repairs) your gates passively. And the more Souls you give to Yggdrasil, the faster the healing ticks.

2. You can toggle your Helmet on and off

w2U5JR9F55ICW-6cx-4PuVZTjl6pxnV00klT36J0F4-LPFY3Bw3UN7XXqpx7rqu3KOdZa0FXV_Dso8rFJLTxynxAY-y3bHoZ9DRI-sFesVQOBEF2ei3IbuAFcNhr62mP3oL99WTcy0clJ4bVxA

Alright, had to include one for those who like to show off their hair. You can toggle your helmet on or off without affecting your armor stats - just open your inventory, press “T” (keyboard) or right in-click (controller) to make your helmet disappear.

1. Run faster on paths

8wT3e_4FlV5uRcbiCGdv-gCE8suPJ0D-Whb1eKl3nxRLd5O2Dofq_cOInoXYB8hY6ouo7lrxU9YeinufM9qKZNQgwDMgPlZMUZEPmSIL41o0HDOMr25KsolG2lJ4jJhOdycCFkeyXmk0mhN6Fg

A classic one- when time is of the essence, be sure to use paths to travel. You’ll immediately run faster on any path in the world! This is especially useful in Saga Mode, where time is certainly of the essence.

Now, I've definitely not covered all tips out there, these are just some that come up rather often in our Discord!

The real question is… are there any more you would add to the list?
You don't need to be on ash beach to build a boat, you can build a boat from anywhere as long as you standing near a body of water, build a boat, roll down, swim, then climb to the boat

Also, you can skip underpass using ramp, and go straight to hideout

Math + Plan
There is a lot of stuff to learn in this game, and one YouTube video I watched (found it)

skip to approx 38:20 where he breaks down the math on what you need. To summarise, he points out, if you're wanting to do a speed run and have a good time, you need to focus on only harvesting as much as you need at any given moment, understanding what you get from the Quarry, and how much you need for the Bridge, etc.

This might be tough to explain in words, but let's say for the Bridge, we'll focus on the 50 Cut Stone requirement.

To craft 1 Cut Stone, you need 8 x stone and 6 x flint. So, if you had 30 Cut Stone, you still need another 20 Cut Stone. Maybe you're not having much luck with finding gates/hills.

If you've been focussing on only harvesting stone and grabbing flint, you would need approx.
  • 160 stone AND
  • 120 flint
to craft the 20 Cut Stone you need.

Having this sort of awareness of materials needed can save you loads of time harvesting and put you in a good spot to achieve the 'beat saga boss before day 7/8' challenge. Time is of the essence and this game has sooooo many things to distract you off your plan. If you're not deliberate you could waste tonnes of time grabbing/looting everything in sight.

Stackable Runes
Runes that have a square bracket are stackable. For example; the Nothing to Hide rune description says 'Increase damage dealt by [30] for each empty Armor slot.' This means if you are naked, you multiply the bonus [30] by five, because you do not have any armor in the five armor slots. Shields do not count. So, if you had two of these runes, your bonus becomes [60] per empty Armor slot. Note: When handing in a quest, beware of what the quest reward is (some give you armor), so remember to unequip, as your damage output will be lowered.

The above YouTube video has a good explanation of how this works if you skip to 10:45 where he talks about the Seidr Weaver rune and how the the 30% chance does not stack but the damage in the square brackets does.

Quest Exploitation to Discover Certain Biomes
During your first trip back to base, you'll want to visit the Quest board and pay attention to the biomes. For example, I always look for quests that are in the Land of Pools so I can rush to Raider Axe III or a Nornir Axe. You don't even need to keep the quest, you can pick the quest, open the map, look for the location and remember it, then go back and change it to a quest you actually want to do.

Destroy & Loot (can be done with any weapon)
I use the Nothing to Hide starter pack, but any starter pack with a weapon will do.

Save your special attack until enemies are swarming nearby at least three or more harvestable resources. For example; if you're running and you catch the attention of an enemy, rather than immediately fighting them and wasting your special attacks, try and use your special attacks nearby things that would normally require you to have a Lumberaxe or Pickaxe.

Who needs a boat?
Under the right circumstances, you can speed-swim from one land to another when you have revealed the position of the three beacons. For example, at night time, with at least one-speed rune, and a speed shrine/potion, you can get a boosted head start when you dive into the water. Worst case, you'll want a full stack of potions to survive the swim.

You can kick trees and rocks to gather things if you don't have the tools to gather them normally at the beginning

Wow I love this! You could totally post your own Guide sometime so more players can see it. :)

You can hold your attack button and not spam it to save your fingers from cramping up.
