The Goblin Chronicles

Part 1 - The Adventure Begins

It was a breezy summers night with clouds sparsely dotting the skies of the Land of Pools when Misfit was awoken by a loud noise. As he began to stand, he heard it again. It was a loud crash coming from a nearby wooded area. As Misfit stood to look around, the soft glow of the full moon was just enough to see a large shadow moving across the land. Misfit quickly grabbed his rock pouch, making sure it was full of dull rocks (never the shinny ones), and quietly began to sneak towards to large shadow. As he gets closer, he notices that there are trees and large pieces of rock laying all over the ground. “This must be what the loud noises I heard before were” he thinks as he jumps over some broken branches and hides behind one of the fallen Yew trees, noticing a few drops of Yew Poison leaking from the sides. Peering over the large tree he notices that the large shadowy figure is towering over the trees and moving very slowly.

Misfit looks around slowly before crouching and making his way over the fallen Yew tree. Before making it far, he hears something from beside him and jumps back as a group of Boar run past! Keeping his ears open and eyes scouring the woods before him, he begins to move again, slowly making his way in the direction of the large shadowed figure. Seemingly the closer he gets to the figure; the more wind is blowing. From the left, a large rock blows by narrowly missing his leg. From the right, a huge chunk of Iron Ore shoots in front of his face.

He ducks down closer to the ground constantly vigilant of the items that are being blown in his direction. Finally, close enough to make out the source of all of the flying debris, it looks like a huge whirlwind spinning around something solid. With wonder in his eyes, he at that moment understands what is in front of him, it is Jarnsaxa! Shaking, he ducks behind another fallen tree nearly being struck by a huge fallen branch. “That was close,” he thinks as he peers around the bottom of the Spruce tree. Luckily Jarnsaxa hadn’t noticed him and continued to tear through the woods before her. He notices many more animals running away from woods before him, from the smallest of Black Wolf cubs to the largest of the Brown Deer.

As Misfit continues to follow the path of destruction before him, he makes his way to a torn down camp. As he walks around a huge pile of branches, he quickly ducks to the ground as he sees a Dökkálfar Warrior leaned up against a fallen tree. After a moment, he peers over the branches and notices that the warrior hadn’t had a chance to flee before Jarnsaxa passed their camp and was no longer alive. “While I’m here, I may as well search for shinny jewels” he thought to himself as he began scavenging thru the fallen warrior’s pouch. Finding nothing, he decides to continue following the path of fallen trees to find out where the angry Jarnsaxa is headed. The morning skies are beginning to show signs of light and he notices a small village in the angry Jotnar’s path. Viking screams can be heard from the distance as Jarnsaxa closes her distance to the village. He notices a few of the Vikings grabbing weapons and armor to combat the raging Jotnar, but doesn’t feel like it will do any good. Hiding behind a large boulder, he watches as the battle ensues. Vikings are in their towers shooting arrows at their foes as others are charging the raging menace with their axes and swords in hand! He thinks, “Why do they not run? This battle has already been decided” as he watches Vikings being blown aside and struck by lightning. CRACK, a streak of lightning hits one of the towers and it catches fire. Seeing the fire and their fellow Vikings being destroyed, the remaining villagers grab what supplies they can and begin to flee the village knowing it is a loss.

After what seemed like half the day, but was really only short time, the angry Jarnsaxa finishes off the few Vikings that remained to defend the village and makes her way off into the distance. He feels for the fallen Vikings, but there was nothing he could do. He head’s down to the village and begins to look around for shinny treasures to add to his collection. Under the rubble of one house, he sees something shinning. He wonders what it could be that is still so shinny after such a hard battle had taken place. Moving some branches and torn leather, he finally sees what was buried in the rubble. It is a strange looking weapon. It shines bright as the sun, but also has bits of what looks like Jarnsaxa’s lightning falling from the sides of the Axe. Misfit, not knowing what to do with it, picks up the weapon and wraps it in some of the torn leather that was covering it in the rubble and turns back towards his own village.

As he is walking away from the village, he hears a slight whistle and turns just in time to see an arrow hitting the ground at his feet. Misfit jumps to the side and pulls a rock from his pouch as he scans the fallen village. Another whistle and an arrow narrowly misses his arm as he crouches to the ground, making himself smaller and harder to see. Off to the side of the village he notices a figure headed his way. Slowly standing back up, he pulls his arm back and swings with furious aggression, throwing the rock with insane precision. Moments later the rock strikes the archer in the head, knocking them to the ground. Walking over to the fallen foe, with another rock in hand, Misfit notices it is a Dökkálfar Archer. He wonders why the archer was attacking him, having never had problems with the Dökkálfar before. Pulling the wrapped-up weapon from his back, Misfit begins to wonder if that was why the Jotun attacked the village, and why he was being attacked?

Part 2 - The Relic

*In a small viking village far away*

"We have a problem" the Valkyrie says as she runs into a hut in the center of the village. A large man sitting at a table turns and glares back in anticipation. "Your brother is dead and the village destroyed" she says, with worry in her voice. The large man calmly replies, "Are we sure?". "The Seer has proclaimed it my lord" she states. The Jarl stands and walks purposefully towards the Valkryie, stopping next to her and speaking quietly "Send word to the villages, we must protect the relics". With that, the Valkyrie turns and disappears into the darkness. "They finally figured it out" the Jarl says to himself, "We must prepare!"

The large man exits the hut and strides purposefully down a small path headed towards the wall surrounding the village. He stops in front of a small, carefully placed rock on the ground and looks around suspiciously. After a moment the man turns and pushes a misshapen part of the wall which slowly opens up before him. Looking around again, he slowly crouches and begins to move away some branches that were within. "Good" he thinks, "It is still here". With that, the man pushes the branches back and closes the small opening in the wall and walks back towards the center of town.

He turns and steps into another hut, this one belonging to Eyrún the Tinker. "We have need of you again, Eyrún" he states. "What do you ask of me, Jarl?" she replies. "We will need arrows, lots of arrows" he proclaims. After much talk, they agree to terms and she informs him that she will need materials to craft what he wishes; branches, flint, birds feathers, and wolves teeth! The sun is peaking over the horizon as the man finally leaves the hut. Heading back to his home, the Jarl lets out a whistle and is met by the Valkyrie. "How goes the defenses" he asks, "Is construction of the Lumberyard and Quarry complete?" The Valkyrie shakes her head, "Close my lord, but not yet finished." Knowing how dire the situation is, the Jarl speaks again "Send more workers, we must finish them quickly!"

*Back at the destroyed village*

Misfit straps the wrapped up weapon to his back again, and decides not to take it to his village. "Something has to be done with this weapon" he thinks to himself, "I cannot bring it back to the others with the risk of attack." The goblin remembers a tale he heard long ago of a fellow goblin who knew much of the world and its past, maybe this is where he should go. Remembering the stories, he tries to think what was said of his location. It mentioned that somewhere in the Glacier Peaks had been a hideout for this goblin, Tanvyn if he remembered correctly. "Yes, that was it. Goblin will search for Tanvyn and find out what this weapon is and why everybody wants it so badly!" With that, Misfit takes one more look around and heads off to the North going into the Bright Forest.

With the sun now fully in the sky, more of his surroundings can be seen. There is a path of destruction ahead from the angry Jotnar which appears to be heading off to the East. "Good thing Misfit is heading North" the goblin thinks. Following a small path thru the Maple and Spruce Tree's, noises can be heard coming from some large tufts of grass. Crouching and hiding behind a huge Maple tree, the goblin peers at the tall grass awaiting whatever is making all the noise on the other side. A small black deer comes barreling out of the grass and runs past the tree that Misfit is hiding behind, not noticing the goblin hiding there. Close on its tail is a pack of black wolves, an older limping one trailing the faster pack mates. It stops and puts its nose up, sniffing the air for a scent that it has picked up. It's head quickly whips to the left and sees the goblin hiding behind the tree. It turns and readies itself for an attack, taking off with a push before leaping towards the hiding goblin. Barely able to move before the wolf leaps in his direction, the goblin rolls to the side just in time with the wolf narrowly missing and smacking head first into the tree. With the wolf stunned, the goblin removes a rock from its pouch and throws it as hard as he can, smacking the wolf between the eyes and killing it. "I will be heading to the super cold area of the Glacier Peaks" the goblin thinks, "maybe I should prepare." The goblin heads over to the fallen wolf and removes the fur, making a small top and placing it in his bag. Happy with his preparations, the goblin turns North again and heads off towards the Glacier Peaks.

*To be continued*
